‘A treehouse, 1.5m (5ft) or more off the ground, has lower impact on the earth than a traditional home and takes into consideration the conditions of nature, rather than working against it.’

INHABIT, NY

Here is the work of another master of treehouse design, Anthony Gibbon, who originally trained as a furniture designer before crossing over into interiors and architecture. His interest in every aspect of design has stayed with him and permeates his work, and he is renowned for creating structures that apply the guiding principles of biomimicry, which seeks not only to use nature as a starting point and inspiration but also as a means of solving problems that may arise regarding the function of a building.

Anthony sees nature as an important driving force in architecture, embracing both its natural forms and its geometry as sources of inspiration. Every structure is created individually to consider the surroundings and uses sustainable natural materials, wherever possible, to create organic forms that exist in nature. Here, near Woodstock in upstate New York, his Inhabit treehouse embodies this philosophy and has evolved from an initial design in his sketchbook to its fruition as an extraordinary treehouse.

‘This location evokes a magical feeling of peace in nature, so designing a building that works with this space really creates a nice vibe when you’re inside it. A lot of wildlife visits the pond, so the platform and large windows make a perfect viewing tower over this scenic area.’
